Dutch cycling outfit Lotto-Jumbo is proud of Steven Kruijswijk despite the rider's crash in the 19th stage which cost him his lead in the overall classification.

Kruijswijk crashed on the descend and saw his once comfortable three-minute lead disappear as he struggled to limit the damage in the remainder of the stage. On Saturday, the Dutchman gave it his all to defend third place but eventually lost it to Alejandro Valverde.

"I am proud of what he managed to do today," said team manager Addy Engels, who also witnessed the collapse of Tom Dumoulin in last year's Vuelta before making the switch from Giant-Alpecin.

"During the stage we could see that he wasn't the same Steven as before his crash, but we didn't expect him to be this good.

"We had to wait and see how things would go today. Maybe he would feel bad and would have to retire after all. But he had a lot left in him which makes the loss of his third place even more disappointing."

Despite the way things unfolded, Engels is set to leave Italy with a largely positive feeling. "Having been so close to winning is still painful. But as a team we deliver a fantastic job this Giro."
