Irish rider Sam Bennett is determined to survive the next stages after suffering injuries in a crash that took place in the final meters of Saturday's Tour de France stage one.

Bennett went down with just seconds to go until the finish and is expected to suffer the consequences of his injuries in Sunday's second stage.

"A few guys crashed in front of me and I couldn't react fast enough," said the Bora - Argon 18 sprinter. "I went down at high speed."

Bora's team doctor believes that Sam may have the mentality required to deal with this set-back: "He has a lot of injuries, but he's going to try. Sam is very motivated to continue," he said.

The 20-year-old, who makes his second Tour de France appearance, suffered injuries to his shoulder and fingers.
