Steven Kruijswijk signs new deal with LottoNL-Jumbo

Dutch cyclist Steven Kruijswijk has extended his contract with LottoNL-Jumbo, the team announced on Friday.

Kruijswijk, who was on his way to winning the Giro d'Italia this year until crashing in the second-to-last stage, had recently been linked to other outfits such as Team Sky.

But the stage race specialist has, as it turns out, opted to remain at his current employer. "I am very happy to spend the next two years at Team LottoNL-Jumbo," he said.

"With the classification train and the sprint train, the team has serious ambitions aiming for 2018. I believe that we can make these ambitions come true. I want to keep working with the technical and supporting staff of the team. I was reassured in that sense during the recent Giro d'Italia. It gives me a lot of confidence for the future."

Technical Director Nico Verhoeven is equally pleased: "Steven is a great example of youth development within our team. Steven is a great general classification specialist and the great performance in the last Giro showed his capacity.

"We are proud of Steven's confidence in our classification train. Steven is currently in Andorra to prepare for the Olympic Games and the Vuelta. After that we'll make plans for next season," he concluded.

The 29-year-old joined the team's youth section (then named Rabobank Continental Team) in 2007 and made his debut for Rabobank's main squad in 2010.
