French rider Thibaut Pinot of FDJ has left the Tour de France due to bronchitis, his team has announced in social media.

The current French Time Trial champion left the race just before the 13th stage, the first time trial of the competition. FDJ's sports manager Yvon Madiot said that on Friday morning Pinot woke up suffering of "cough and fever".

Pinot was number three in the Tour de France of 2014 and that same year he got the white jersey. During the current edition he managed to wear the Polka Dot jersey during three stages.

He had some difficult times during the Tour, losing time during the Pyrenees and struggling to ascend the Mont Ventoux, terrain on which he is also a specialist.

Pinot is set to participate in the time trial and the road race at the Olympic Games of Rio 2016.
