Tour de Pologne: Wellens gets stage and leads general classification

Belgian Tim Wellens of Lotto-Soudal has won the fifth stage of the Tour de Pologne and is also leading the general classification. Davide Formolo of Cannondale-Drapac and Tiesj Benoot of Lotto-Soudal arrived to the finish line in second and third place.

It was a very difficult stage, not only because of its mountainous terrain, but also because of the hard rain that lasted until the end. The route took place between Wieliczka and Wielka Krokiew and had seven climbs of the first category.

Tim Wellens (LTS), Alessandro De Marchi (BMC), Philippe Gilbert (BMC), Nicolas Roche (SKY), Alberto Bettiol (CDT), Bob Jungels (EQS), Jonathan Castroviejo (MOV), Rubén Fernández (MOV), Giovanni Visconti (MOV), Ignatas Konovalovas (FDJ), Dion Smith (ONE), Primoz Roglic (TLJ), Fabio Felline (TSF) and Hugo Houle (ALM) escaped from the peloton early on.

But climb after climb the group got smaller and Wellens took his chances to escape alone.

Felline and Bettiol completed the top five of the stage. Wellens moved into first place in the general classification and is the best climber as well as the most active rider. Benoot leads the sprint ranking and Lotto-Soudal is the best team.

The day also finished with many abandons such as Przemyslaw Niemiec of Lampre-Merida, Ryder Hesjedal, Stijn Devolder and Eugenio Alafaci of Trek-Segafredo; Jhonatan Restrepo, Anton Vorobyev and Simon Spilak of Team Katusha and Andrey Amador of Movistar.
