The Spanish team for the Olympics will be led by Alejandro Valverde. With him will be Joaquím Rodríguez of Katusha and Ion Izaguirre, Imanol Erviti and Jonathan Castroviejo of Movistar.

The Royal Spanish Cycling Federation (RFEC) said that all of them will be in the road race of August 6th and Castroviejo and Izaguirre will be in the Time Trial competition of August 16th.

The Rio de Janeiro edition will be the fourth Olympic Games for Alejandro Valverde after Athens 2004, Beijing 2008 and London 2102. Izaguirre will be there for the second time after London, where he got the ninth position in the time trial.

All the Spanish cycling team will travel to Brazil on July 31, a day after the Clásica de San Sebastián.

Although Alberto Contador was rumoured to go to represent his country, the injuries that he suffered during the Tour de France stopped him from participating.
