Daniele Bennati of Tinkoff has won the opening stage in the Tour of Denmark, locally known as the Post Danmark Rundt.

The first stage of the 2.HC race took place in the west of Denmark with a 200 kilometers long ride from Herning to Esbjerg.

The difference was made in the final kilometers as Bennati and home rider Mads Wurtz Schmidt of Bjarne Riis' new team Team Virtu Pro - Veloconcept attacked together and soon found themselves well ahead of the peloton.

The two maintained their advantage in the last few kilometers and Bennati had the stronger legs in the sprint, easily beating his Danish opponent to win the stage and take the lead in the overall classification. LottoNL-Jumbo rider Moreno Hofland won the sprint for third place.

The Post Danmark Rondt consists of five stages including one individual time trial on day four.
