Australian William Clarke of Drapac has won the third stage in the Tour of Portugal. Home rider Rui Vinhas is the new leader in the overall classification.

The stage contained more hills than the previous stages and as such allowed riders to try to go for glory by forming part of an escape group. Josu Zabala made such an attempt by lacking companions, the Spaniard never built a decent lead and was soon caught by the peloton.

Clarke and Marco Frapporti were more successful and saw their advantage over the pack increase to up to nine minutes. A group of seven was in between at two minutes from the leading duo.

Although both the chase group and the peloton reduced the gap in the last phase of the stage, Clarke and Frapporti maintained a comfortable lead and as such battled for victory in a final sprint. Clarke turned out to have the stronger legs and secured his fifth victory of the season.

Portuguese rider Rui Vinhas of W52-FC Porto-Porto Canal finished at 54 seconds in the chase group and takes the lead in the overall classification. Former leader Daniel Mestre moves down to second place at more than three minutes from his compatriot.
