Diego Ulissi of Lampre - Merida has won the 2016 edition of the Circuito de Getxo. The Italian won the sprint of an escape group of 16.

It was a day of many attacks in the Basque town of Getxo. The final attack was forced by Movistar and left a group of 16 competing for the victory.

In the sprint, Ulissi finished ahead of Briton Simon Yates and Spaniard Jose Herrada. For Ulissi and Yates this was the second Basque race this weekend after having taken part in the Clasica San Sebastian on Saturday.

Ulissi is the third Italian to win the race, which is currently categorized as a Europe Tour 1.1 event, after Alessandro Bertolini in 2001 and Giovanni Visconti in 2012. The Lampre rider succeeds Nacer Bouhanni who won the race in 2015.

With this victory, Ulissi earns a total of 125 UCI points.
