From crash to victory: Danny van Poppel wins in Vuelta a Burgos

Danny van Poppel of Team Sky is the first leader of the Vuelta a Burgos after winning the opening stage of the Spanish 2.HC race.

A breakaway group of seven riders spent part of the day ahead of the bunch in the 158km stage from Sasamon to Melgar de Fernamental but their effort led to nothing as the peloton caught up with less than 20 kilometers to go.

Spaniard Igor Merino attempted a late attack but the Burgos BH rider was unsurprisingly caught by those preparing the mass sprint for their respective leaders.

At the finish, Van Poppel crossed the line well ahead of his nearest rival Jean-Pierre Drucker of BMC. Belgian Gianni Meersman, who wore the leader's jersey for some days in the recent Tour de Wallonie, finished third.

Van Poppel, who had crashed earlier in the stage but still managed to fight his way back to the front, handed Team Sky its 29th victory of the season.
