The longest stage of the Vuelta a Burgos 2016 was won by Dutch rider Danny van Poppel of Team Sky. He got the victory in a final sprint over Jean Pierre Drucker of BMC and Gianni Meersman of Etixx-Quick-Step. Dmitriy Gruzdev of Astana remained in the lead in the general classification.

The stage of 192 kilometers took place between Valle de Sedano and Villarcayo and had a route that included three third category climbs.

There was an escape in the first kilometers which included the intern of Giant-Alpecin Jochem Hoekstra, Yanto Barker of ONE, Giacomo Berlato of Nippo-Vini Fantini, Jesus del Pino of Burgos BH and Eneko Lizarralde of Euskadi Basque Country-Murias.

After an acceleration of the peloton, this first group was caught but during the last climb of the day to the Alto Retuerte, Alberto Contador and Michele Scarponi of Tinkoff, Gianluca Brambilla of Etixx-Quick Step, and Ruben Fernandez of Movistar formed a gap with the main group. Despite the effort however, they were caught in the last kilometers.

The stage finished in a bunch sprint in which the Dutchman proved to be the fastest of the pack for the second time in this race.
