Volta a Portugal: Gonçalves wins stage, Vinhas keeps lead

Portuguese rider Jose Gonçalves of Caja Rural-Seguros RGA has taken the victory in the seventh stage of the Volta a Portugal. In the final sprint in the city of Castelo Branco, he beat Samuel Caldeira of W52 and Italian Francesco Gavazzo of Androni Giocattoli. Rui Vinhas keeps the lead in the general classification.

The stage led the riders from Figueira de Castelo Rodrigo to Castelo Branco on a hilly route which covered 182 kilometers.

Early on the day a group of five riders took the lead reaching a gap of around five minutes with the main group: Mario Gonzalez of Sporting Tavira, Yoann Barbas of Armée de Terre, Alejandro Marque de LA Aluminios-Antarte, Benat Txoperena of Euskadi Basque Country-Murias and Adam Phelan of Drapac Professional Cycling.

The peloton was controlled by the team of race leader Vinhas along with Androni-Sideremec and Caja Rural. The last of the escapees was caught at just two kilometers from the finish line, sentencing the stage to a final bunch sprint.

Gonçalves showed to be the strongest in the sprint and he was followed closely by Caldeira, Gavazzi, Gustavo César Veloso of W52 and Daniel Mestre of Efapel.
