Tour of Utah: Kiel Reijnen wins fifth stage

American rider Kiel Reijnen of Trek-Segafredo secured the victory in the fifth stage of the Tour of Utah. Briton Tao Geoghegan Hart of Axeon Hagens Berman and Alex Howes of Cannondale-Drapac finished second and third.

The fifth stage is one of the favorites of the locals and unlike the other days, it was possible to see people standing on the side of the road cheering the riders. To emphasize the importance of the stage, the organization of the tour placed 4.000 American flags along the route.

It was a mountainous stage with a profile that has been compared to the "Ardennes Classics", including short but very steep climbs. The riders ascended the North Ogden Divide, Trappers Loop and the Bountiful Bench (twice).

A few kilometers into the stage a breakaway was formed with Julien Bernard (Trek-Segafredo), Evan Huffman (Rally Cycling), Simon Pellaud (IAM), Alexander Cataford (Silber Pro Cycling Team), Christopher Jones (UnitedHealthcare) and Tom Bohli (BMC). It reached a gap of more than five minutes with the peloton.

During the first ascent up the Bountiful Bench, Bernard escaped and managed to create an advantage of more than a minute over the chasers. He was caught just before the final climb and a new breakaway was formed, but the latest attempt was equally unsuccessful.

The stage finished in a bunch sprint in which Reijnen showed to be stronger than his opponents. Andrew Talansky and Daniel Jaramillo completed the top five of the day.

Lachlan Morton of Jelly Bean p/b Maxxis once again wore the yellow leader's jersey at the end of the day.
