Sam Oomen of Team Giant-Alpecin has won the third stage of the Tour de l'Ain and takes the lead in the general classification.

The 141.7km stage from Nantua to Lelex featured a hilly course and several attacks in the first hour. A breakaway with Pierre-Luc Perichon, Perrig Quemeneur and Remy Di Gregorio managed to create a four-minute gap with the peloton but lost significant terrain in the second half of the stage and were eventually caught by a group of 15.

The amount of riders in this group of favorites soon decreased to just five with Oomen launching one final attack at about three kilometers from the finish.

The Dutchman was almost caught by kept a one-second advantage over his chasers. Pierre Latour of Ag2r-La Mondiale and Bart de Clercq of Lotto-Soudal completed the top three.

Oomen, for whom this was his first ever professional victory, takes the overall lead with a five-second advantage over Latour.
