Young Dutch rider Sam Oomen has won the Tour de l'Ain, successfully defending his lead in the final stage won by Alexandre Geniez.
Oomen, riding for Giant-Alpecin, took the lead in the French race after the third of four stages and faced the difficult task of defending the jersey in a heavy mountain stage.
The neo-professional, who turns 21 on Sunday, did well to stay in the group of favorites until the finish and eventually crossed the line in seventh place, good enough to secure his position at the top of the general classification.
French rider Alexandre Geniez of FDJ took the final stage victory by beating Romain Hardy (COF) and Belgian Bart De Clercq (LTS) in the final sprint. The latter finishes in second place in the overall classification.
The overall victory is Oomen's first as a professional. While riding for the Rabobank Development Team, he had already won the Rhone-Alpes Isere Tour and finished fourth in the Tour de l'Avenir.
