Vuelta: No GC ambitions for Tejay van Garderen

American cyclist Tejay van Garderen is not planning to aim for a high position in the General Classification of the Vuelta a España, which is scheduled to start on Saturday.

Van Garderen did not have the Tour de France he had hoped for but the rider of BMC Racing Team won't use the Vuelta to return to the top of the classification of a Grand Tour. Instead, he is determined to help Spaniard Samuel Sanchez.

"The GC for us will be for 'Samu' and I'm going to do what I can to help him and also hunt for breakaways," Van Garderen said.

"Really it's about getting two Grand Tours in one season in the legs, to help me build the edge and maybe give me a bit more depth going into next season.

"I definitely don't want to ride around anonymously, I want to hunt for a stage win. But it'll be a different kind of stage race for me, so it'll be an interesting race for me.

The 28-year-old is set to make his third La Vuelta appearance after having taken part in 2010 and 2015. In the first of those two editions Van Garderen positioned himself in 35th place. Last year, the rider crashed out with a broken shoulder.
