Vuelta leader Ruben Fernandez: I know what is my job

The finish line of the third stage in the 2016 Vuelta a España saw a Ruben Fernandez celebrating euphorically his first spot in the General Classification, but the rider says that he knows what is his job at Movistar Team.

"I am extremely happy to be wearing the red shirt. We have been working hard and sincerely we didn't expect to get the leader's jersey today. We didn't predict it but we got it," said the Spaniard.

The 25-year-old added this provisional first place in the general classification in the Spanish grand tour to a palmares that also includes a victory in the 2013 Tour de l'Avenir, a sixth place in the 2015 Tour of Britain and a fifth position in the same year's Tour Down Under.

"I was fine all the time but I was working for (Nairo) Quintana and (Alejandro) Valverde. I didn't think of attacking but at the end I got the clearance to do so. I rode some meters ahead and got just the time to be the leader. For me this is important and very nice," he commented.

The rider pointed out that this was not part of the plan because the day's objective was to defend the interests of Movistar's leaders Quintana and Valverde, something that he will keep doing.

"Our plan worked and now we will see what happens tomorrow. I know clearly what is my job," he finished.
