French rider Thibaut Pinot of team FDJ has ended his 2016 season after having been struck by a virus during the Tour de France in July.

The Frenchman says that he hasn't fully recovered from the virus and continues to suffer from fatigue. By ending the season a little early, Pinot hopes to regain energy in time for the 2017 campaign.

"After my abandon in the Tour de France, a persistent fatigue due to a virus has delayed my preparation for the last month of competition," Pinot wrote on Twitter.

"In agreement with FDJ, I prefer to end my 2016 season and recover completely"

The 2016 season has been successful for the 26-year-old, having won the French National Time Trial Championships, the Criterium International and a stage in the Criterium du Dauphine. In addition, Pinot wore the Polka Dot Jersey of the Tour de France for three days.
