Tour of Britain: Vermote wins second stage

Julien Vermote of Etixx-Quick Step has won the second stage of the Tour of Britain ahead of Stephen Cummings of Dimension Data. The Belgian rider also takes the first position in the General Classification of the race.

The stage was 187.7 kilometers long and contained two second-category climbs and one of the first category, finishing on the steep Beast Banks climb in Kendal. The day began in the city of Carlisle, which suffered some serious flooding during the last winter.

Early in the stage a breakaway formed and reached an advantage of more than three minutes over the peloton. This group of 15 riders included Johann Van Zyl (DDD), Nicolas Roche (SKY), Julien Vermote (EQS), Loïc Vliegen (BMC), Ryan Mullen (CDT), Benito Saez (CJR), Andre Greipel (LTS), Conor Dunne (JLT).

Behind those in front, the peloton was led by several teams including Movistar and Dimension Data with riders like Alex Dowsett and Mark Cavendish taking their turn to set the pace and reduce the gap.

The first category climb, adequately named "The Struggle" caused the front group to break and after the summit only five riders remained. Rohan Dennis, Roche, Vermote, Bertjan Lindeman, Jacopo Mosca and Xandro Meurisse continued for some kilometers until they were caught by a group that included Steve Cummings, Ben Swift, Tony Gallopin and Tom Dumoulin.

Shortly after, Cummings and Vermote attacked and created a gap of more than 40 seconds with the rest of the chasers. In the steep last kilometer Vermote waited until the final meters to accelerate, leaving the Dimension Data rider in the second position for the stage.

The top 5 of the stage and the general classification is completed by Daniel Martin, Xandro Meurisse and Tony Gallopin.
