Tony Gallopin of Lotto-Soudal has won the Grand Prix of Wallonie in Belgium. The French rider crossed the finish line just before Etixx-Quick Step's Petr Vakoc and Wanty-Groupe Gobert's Jerome Baugnies.

The route took place between the cities of Beaufays and Namur in Belgium and Dutch team Roompot-Oranje Peloton tried to control the situation from the beginning. With some kilometers to go, Dutchman Pieter Weening launched an early attack but was soon caught by the chasers.

Tiesj Benoot and Gallopin then went to the front of the peloton taking turns to set a higher pace. Soon the French rider attacked and dropped everybody else and though it looked like he was heading for a solo finish, Vakoc almost caught up and finished only just behind his rival.

"Two years ago I finished second on the citadel. This climb suits me very well. In the last fifty meters Vakoc came really close and the stress was getting to me. Fortunately I went fast enough to bring home the victory," the rider said.

Gallopin is already looking to this Sunday's European Championships, something he has been preparing for. "The team gave me permission to change my programme because I wanted to focus on the European Championships that are coming up this Sunday. That's why I didn't participate in the races in Canada. Instead I chose to ride the Tour of Britain before I came here for the Grand Prix de Wallonie.

"It feels really good to know that the team trusts me. In the Tour of Britain I felt better every day. I hoped to win a stage there, but unfortunately that didn't happen. But my focus is on Sunday, that's when I want to be really good."
