Fernando Gaviria victorious in Primus Classic Impanis - Van Petegem

Colombian Fernando Gaviria of Etixx-Quick Step has won the 1.HC Primus Classic Impanis - Van Petegem. Timothy Dupont finished second.

After losing to Dupont in Friday's Kampioenschap van Vlaanderen, Gaviria and the Belgian switched roles in Saturday's race with the former taking the victory in the final sprint.

Several lead groups formed during the Belgian race, the last of which included Gaviria and Olympic champion Greg Van Avermaet. The group was caught at eight kilometers from the finish but Gaviria had enough strength left in his legs to cross the line ahead of Dupont of Veranda's Willems Cycling Team.

Another South American completed the podium with Argentina's Maximiliano Ariel Richeze taking third place for Etixx-Quick Step. Tom Van Asbroeck and Magnus Cort Nielsen completed the top five.

The Primus Classic Impanis-Van Petegem, which in the past was known by several other names, had its opening edition in 1982 and although it ceased to exist after 1994, it was revived for the 2011 season. Since then, four out of five editions were won by Belgians.

By winning this year's edition, Gaviria succeeds Sean De Bie who won the race for Lotto-Soudal in 2015.
