Alejandro Valverde leads Spanish pre-selection for World Championships

Alejandro Valverde leads the pre-selection for the upcoming Cycling World Championships in Doha, Qatar. As it stands, the Movistar rider is joined by six of his usual teammates.

Spain coach Javier Minquez selected 14 riders for the Championships, of which nine will eventually make the final cut and take part in the Road Race on October 16th.

The Spanish selection also includes a time trial specialists as Movistar's Jonathan Castroviejo won the European Championships time trial earlier this month and impressed in the individual time trial of the Vuelta a España on September 9th.

UCI Professional Continental team Caja Rural-Seguros RGA is also well represented with four riders, while only three of those selected by Minguez currently ride for non-Spanish teams.

The Spanish selection will aim to win its first World Championships title since Oscar Freire in 2004. Spain currently has a total of five victories, including Freire's three wins and one win each for Abraham Olano and Igor Astarloa.
