Luka Pibernik victorious in Eneco Tour

Luka Pibernik of Lampre-Merida has won the sixth stage of the Eneco Tour, finishing first in a sprint of five to secure his first UCI WorldTour victory.

The group of five with Pibernik, Mark McNally (Wiggins), Bert van Lerbeghe (Topsport Vlaanderen - Baloise), Chad Haga (Giant Alpecin) and Alexis Gougeard (AG2R La Mondiale) began their adventure early on the day and built a lead of close to five minutes.

Patrick Bevin tried to bridge the gap with the leaders but the Cannondale-Drapac rider failed to do so and was later caught by the peloton.

This was not the case for the lead group, which carefully calculated its advantage to finish just seconds ahead of the pack. In the sprint, Pibernik proved to have the best leg and finished ahead of McNally and Van Lerberghe. Gougeard and Haga completed the top five and Giacomo Nizzolo won the bunch sprint for sixth place.

There was a number of crashes in the penultimate stage, most notably the one involving Marcel Sieberg who hit the ground on a railway crossing and was forced to abandon.

Although the peloton came too late to fight for the stage victory, BMC Racing Team had done enough for Rohan Dennis to remain in the overall lead ahead of his teammate Taylor Phinney.
