Esteban Chaves climbs to victory in Giro dell'Emilia

Esteban Chaves of Orica-BikeExchange has won the Giro dell'Emila. The Colombian finished seconds ahead of Romain Bardet and compatriot Rigoberto Uran.

Eight riders escaped shortly after the start of the Italian 1.HC race, including Vuelta a España stage winners Alexandre Geniez, Pierre Latour and Jens Keukeleire.

The group of eight was reduced to just three riders (Latour, Alberto Nardin and Alessandro de Marchi) after the second of five climbs in San Luca. One lap later, Nardin also dropped and left only Latour and Nardin in the lead.

The two were still ahead on the last descent of the day but Latour then missed a curve. De Marchi waited for his companion but the incident cost them valuable seconds. At two kilometers from the finish, the advantage was down to 15 seconds and although Latour tried a late attack, it wasn't enough for the Frenchman to stay ahead.

More attacks were attempted in the last kilometers but it was Chaves to surpass all of his rivals and take the victory ahead of Bardet and Uran. Fabio Aru finished fourth, ahead of last year's winner Jan Bakelants.

Chaves is the third Colombian to win the race, after Carlos Betancur in 2011 and Nairo Quintana in 2012.
