Fernando Gaviria sprints to victory in Paris-Tours

Colombian Fernando Gaviria has won the 2016 edition of Paris-Tours, winning the final sprint ahead of Arnaud Demare and Jonas Van Genechten.

A group of seven riders spent a large part of the day ahead of the peloton with Floris Gerts (BMC), Pirmin Lang (IAM), Warren Barguil (Giant-Alpecin), Brian van Goethem (Roompot-Oranje Peloton), Kevin Lebreton (Armee de Terre), Maarten Wynants (LottoNL-Jumbo) and Arnaud Gerard (Fortuneo-Vital Concept) building a gap of over three minutes.

The last remaining leaders were caught with about 14 kilometers to go however. Bert De Backer of Giant-Alpecin and Sergey Lagutin of Team Katusha then tried their luck but they too were reeled in at 5.6 kilometers from the finish.

Arriving on the famous Avenue de Grammont, the sprint teams battled for a spot at the front of the peloton but it was Gaviria to launch a very early sprint and surprise his rivals by staying ahead until the finish line.

The win is the second in a row for Etixx-Quick Step following Matteo Trentin's victory in 2015, and the first win for a non-European since Australia's Phil Anderson in 1986.

With Jonas Van Genechten's third place in this race, IAM Cycling puts an end to its existence in the professional cycling peloton after two years as a UCI Pro Continental team (2013-2014) followed by two years as a UCI WorldTeam.
