Alejandro Valverde extends contract with Movistar through 2019

Spanish cyclist Alejandro Valverde has extended his contract with Movistar Team, adding another three seasons to his already impressive career.

The 36-year-old joined his current team in 2005 and will as such, if everything goes as planned, spend at least 15 years at the Spanish formation.

"It's already official," Valverde tweeted shortly after the announcement. "I'm very happy to continue three more seasons with my family at Movistar Team. At least until 2019."

While riding for the team, Valverde has collected numerous victories including the overall classification of the Vuelta a España in 2009.

In addition, the Murcia-born rider won a total of nine classics: Four editions of La Fleche Wallone, three of Liege-Bastogne-Liege and two of the Clasica San Sebastian.

The 2016 season was an eventful one for the Spaniard. In addition to winning La Fleche Wallonne for the fourth time, Valverde took part in all three Grand Tours for the very first time in his career. After finishing third in the Giro d'Italia, the rider went on to place sixth in the Tour de France and 12th in the Vuelta a España. In the Tour and the Vuelta, Valverde's main target was to help his teammate Nairo Quintana compete for the overall victory.

In its press statement, Movistar describes the rider as a "neverending light".

"Possibly the most complete and consistent Spanish rider ever and a reference for international cycling during the last 15 years," it added.
