Giacomo Nizzolo sprints to victory in Abu Dhabi Tour

Italian champion Giacomo Nizzolo of Trek-Segafredo is the first leader of the 2016 Abu Dhabi Tour after winning the opening stage in Madinat Zayed.

The first of four stages was 147 kilometers long and was expected to be a perfect opportunity for sprinters to show their abilities.

The peloton spent part of the day chasing a lead group of four with Jens Keukeleure and Michael Matthews of Orica-BikeExchange, Gatis Smukulis of Astana Pro Team and Dion Smith of One Pro Cycling.

The lead group's advantage seemed comfortable going into the last 20 kilometers but the peloton increased the pace just on time to catch the four escapees at seven kilometers from the finish.

In the final sprint, Italian champion Nizzolo was successfully launched by his team Trek-Segafedo and crossed the line ahead of German John Degenkolb and Britain's Mark Cavendish.

This year's edition of the Abu Dhabi Tour is organized as a UCI 2.1 category race but will serve as a preparation for next year when the event forms part of the UCI WorldTour calendar.
