Mark Cavendish wins last stage in Abu Dhabi Tour, overall for Kangert

Mark Cavendish has closed his 2016 campaign with a sprint victory in the last stage of the Abu Dhabi Tour. Tanel Kangert secured the overall win.

The last of four stages took place on the Yas Marina Circuit of Abu Dhabi where the riders completed 26 laps of 5.5 kilometers for a total distance of 143 kilometers.

Three riders had a modest lead over the peloton going into the finale as Frederik Frison of Lotto-Soudal, Michal Paluta of CCC Sprandi Polkowice and Kristian House of One Pro Cycling attempted to keep the chasers at bay.

The three couldn't prevent the anticipated mass sprint from happening however and Dimension Data sprinter Cavendish powered to victory ahead of Italian champion Giacomo Nizzolo of Trek Factory Racing.

Third place went to Elia Viviani of Team Sky, ahead of Magnus Cort Nielsen of Orica-BikeExchange and Jean Pierre Drucker of BMC Racing Team.

In the General Classification, Tanel Kangert's top spot was never at risk as the Estonian maintained a 21-second advantage over Nicolas Roche and as such succeeds last year's inaugural winner Esteban Chaves.
