Italian rider Vincenzo Nibali has a clear objective for the upcoming 2017 season and it is to defend his title in the Giro d'Italia. The leader of new team Bahrain-Merida wants this historic race to be the highlight of the season.

The next edition of the Italian Grand Tour will the race's 100th and the 'Shark' doesn't want to let the opportunity pass to continue making history in his home country and in front of his own crowd.

"It is the 100th edition of the Giro and I am the last winner, and there is also a stage in Messina, so it is important for my people. I want to go to the Giro d'Italia, but I don't have the programme yet," said Nibali before attending the presentation of the route of the 2017 Giro d'Italia.

"Attending the course presentation is an important step in my decision. But, we have to know each other at the new team first. Next week we will arrive in Croatia to spend our first time together. That will be very helpful and will also let us talk about our programs."

During the first training camp of the Middle-East formation, Nibali will start outlining the plan to tackle the Italian race. And Mauro Vegni, boss of RCS Sport, organizer of the Giro, expects that the public will see an interesting battle between the 'Shark' and Fabio Aru, his former teammate at Astana.
