ALEXEY LUTSENKO
ASTANA PRO TEAM

Alexey Lutsenko of Astana rider has strengthened his position at the top of the Tour of Hainan classification by winning Saturday's eighth stage.

After some failed attempts by riders who posed less of a threat to the top spots of the classification, things were shaken up when fifth-placed Mauricio Ortega of RTS-Monto Racing attacked in the hilly finale.

Lutsenko was forced to react and caught the Colombian with the help of four others. Not much later, the remainder of the peloton joined up as well.

Enough Astana riders had made their way back to the front to allow them to set up a sprint train for Lutsenko. The Kazakh did not disappoint at the finish and crossed the line ahead of Brazilian Rafael Andriato of Wilier-Southeast.

With just one flat stage to go, Lutsenko now has a 17-second lead over Lampre-Merida's Przemyslaw Niemiec, whose teammate Matej Mohoric remains in third place at 44 seconds.
