Esteban Chaves to ride the 2017 Giro d'Italia

Colombian Esteban Chaves has decided to ride the Giro de Italia in 2017. The rider studied the route of the Italian and the French Grand Tours and decided for the former.

The Orica-BikeExchange rider has a history with the Giro d'Italia, winning the white young rider classification jersey in 2015 and finishing second in 2016, and believes the mountain stages in the upcoming edition suit him more than the route of the Tour de France.

"We don't have to go just because it is the Tour, but we have to find a race that is good for my features as a climber. If we continue in this line I will have many years to go to the Tour and surely we will find a route that is good for my traits and where I can give it all," said the rider to his home country television channel RCN.

The 100th edition of the Italian Grand Tour will have many mountain stages, which are the favorites for the Colombian, including the Blockhaus at 26 kilometers long and a 14% gradient. During the second week, the route will go to Bergamo and will include some of the climbs of the last Giro de Lombardia, which was won by Chaves.

The rider knows Italy and has had the chance to train there, a reason why he knows a lot of the route of the race. "I have a special feeling for Italy. I like Italian cycling a lot and I have many friends there," he added.
