Aru to lead Astana in Giro, Fuglsang and Lopez in Tour

Fabio Aru is set to lead Kazakh WorldTour formation in the 2017 Giro d'Italia while Miguel Angel Lopez and Jakob Fuglsang take charge in the Tour de France.

In a meeting in Kazakhstan, Astana reviewed the work of the team in 2016 and presented a plan for the upcoming 2017 season.

The main goal of the team will be to win the Giro d'Italia where the squad will be led by Fabio Aru. For the Tour de France, Astana will have two leaders: Jakob Fuglsang and Miguel Angel Lopez.

For the final Grand Tour of the season, the Vuelta a España, it was decided that Fabio Aru will once again lead the team in an attempt to repeat his victory of 2015. All these squads will include some of the Kazakh riders.

"Traditionally, it is planned to include the Kazakhstani riders, Andrey Zeits, Dmitriy Gruzdev, Bakhtiyar Kozhatayev and Alexey Lutsenko into the team to participate in the grand tours. Maybe, we will also try Daniil Fominykh and Artyom Zakharov", said General Manager Alexander Vinokourov.

Astana's roster will consist of 28 riders, nine of which are set to make their debut for the team. The formation will use Argon 18 bicycles.

The Manager also commented on the successful 2016 season of the team, which earned a total of 34 victories. "I think we had a successful season, we won the grand tour with Vincenzo Nibali and won a large number of victories in other races. Especially pleasant fact is that seven victories were won by our Kazakhstani riders".

Vinokourov also announced a special date for the team presentation ahead of the 2017. "We decided to make a presentation in honour of the 25th Anniversary of Independence of our country in the capital of Kazakhstan, Astana.

"I think it is very symbolic, the more that the team wears its name. So we invite all in Astana on December 11. We will bring there the whole team, and it will be a great event, come!" the General Manager finished.
