WOUT POELS
TEAM SKY

Wout Poels will not be leading Team Sky in any of the grand tours in 2017. The rider confirmed this to Dutch media.

The Dutchman told broadcaster NOS that a leading position in a grand tour is not part of the team's plans for the rider in the coming season. Following his convincing performance as Chris Froome's principal domestique during the 2016 Tour de France, there appeared to be a possibility of him becoming a leader for the Giro.

"I did ask for it, but unfortunately no," he said. "That's also the only disadvantage of riding for a big team like Sky."

Poels is expected to start his season in the Volta a la Comunitat Valenciana, which he won in 2016, and will then likely ride Paris-Nice. "Then the classics and then the Tour of Switzerland," he added.

The 29-year-old joined Team Sky from Quick-Step in 2015 and was a major force in Froome's last two Tour de France victories. This year, the rider earned his first classic victory by winning Liege-Bastogne-Liege in Belgium.
