Nairo Quintana to ride Giro d'Italia and Tour de France in 2017

Colombian cyclist Nairo Quintana will ride the Giro d'Italia and the Tour de France in 2017.

The reigning Vuelta a España champion told Colombian newspaper El Tiempo about his plans for the coming year. "I will ride in Spain in January and February and then return to prepare for the Giro and then the Tour," he said.

"It's all decided. We will try to do well in the Giro but the objective is to build a good condition in order to face the Tour."

The rider confirmed that the Vuelta is not in his plans for 2017. "We are doing the Giro and the Tour and it will be difficult to do the Vuelta with all the energy we'll be spending. With those two Grand Tours it's more than enough."

Asked about the route of the Tour de France, Quintana replied that it will offer a bigger fight between the key candidates. "The good thing is that there aren't too many time trial kilometers. That's good because that way the others won't gain much time on us.

Quintana, 26, won the Giro d'Italia in 2014 in what was until now his only appearance in the Italian race.
