Alejandro Valverde suffers hit during training

Alejandro Valverde has suffered an accident close to his house in Spain and he will probably not be able to attend the presentation of the Vuelta a España 2017 on Thursday.

While on his bike, the rider was passing the security barrier of the urbanization where he resides in Murcia, when the barrier came down and hit him, causing multiple injuries.

"It was a really hard blow," the rider said in a message posted to social media. "The barrier of the urbanization went down and hit me fully on the arms and chest. I tried to train but I could only do so for half an hour because of the pain.

"I hope with ice and anti-inflammatory medicines it won't get worse but I guess that tomorrow the cold will be worst. The good news is that it seems only muscular, but the truth is that right now I can barely move," the Spaniard added.

Valverde was set to make an appearance during the presentation of the route of the 2017 Vuelta a España in Madrid, but that now depends on the way he feels on Thursday.
