New Zealand talent Dion Smith has signed for Wanty-Groupe Gobert. The Belgian UCI Professional Continental unveiled their latest addition during their presentation on Friday.
Smith, 23, will take the place of Dutchman Lieuwe Westra who had originally joined Wanty from Astana but then unexpectedly announced his retirement.
The New Zealander began his professional career as a stagiaire with Champion System in 2013 and joined the Hincapie Sportswear Development Team a year later. During his two years at Hincapie, Smith earned two Silver medals in the New Zealand U23 road race and finished fifth in the 2015 Tour of Alberta.
In 2016, Smith moved to ONE Pro Cycling where he finished second at the elite version of the New Zealand national road race and tenth at the Herald Sun Tour, the Tour de Yorkshire and the Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race.
