Nairo Quintana to ride Giro and Tour, Valverde to focus on Tour and Vuelta

Nairo Quintana and Alejandro Valverde will both ride the Tour de France this year. In addition, Quintana will also ride the Giro d'Italia while Valverde will focus on the Vuelta a España.

Quintana had already unveiled his plans earlier but this was initially denied by his team, Movistar. The Spanish WorldTour formation has now confirmed the Colombian's schedule through a press release.

The rider's preparation for the 100th Giro d'Italia will start with the Challenge de Mallorca, followed by the Volta a la Comunitat Valenciana and the Abu Dhabi Tour. Quintana will then ride the Tirreno-Adriatico in March followed by a training stint in Colombia and the Vuelta a Asturias.

There won't any conflict of interests at the Giro or the Vuelta as Movistar's two leaders will each get one chance to shine, in addition to the Tour de France where the two will have to work together.

Valverde joins Quintana at the Challenge de Mallorca before riding the Vuelta a Murcia, the Clasica de Almeria, the Vuelta a Andalucia and Paris-Nice. The Spaniard is also set to ride the Ardennes classics (Amstel Gold Race, the Fleche Wallonne and Liege-Bastogne-Liege).

As reigning Vuelta a España champion Quintana will be absent from the Spanish grand tour, it will be in the hands of Valverde to defend his teammate's victory for Movistar.
