Perfect tactics allow Jay McCarthy to finish third at Tour Down Under

Australian Jay McCarthy of Bora-hansgrohe has handed his team its first WorldTour podium finish in 2017 by finishing third in the Tour Down Under.

McCarthy was one of the most consistend riders in this year's edition of the Australian race, finishing in the top 20 in all of the sixth stages. His best finish was a fifth place in stage 5, to Willunga Hill, which left him in fourth place at three seconds from third-placed Nathan Haas.

In the final stage, Bora-hansgrohe's tactics worked out perfectly with McCarthy winning the first intermediate sprint to surpass Haas in the standings and thus securing the third place in the overall classification.

"I'm super happy," said the rider. "We had the plan to go for the intermediate in the team meeting this morning and it worked.

"I have to thank the team so much. We controlled it from the start and made sure the breakaway wasn't gone for the intermediate. Having the current World Champion, Peter Sagan, leading me out, is bloody awesome, so I'm really happy I'm on the podium.

The 24-year-old, who joined Bora-hansgrohe from the now defunct Tinkoff Team, had already finished fourth in last year's Tour Down Under.
