Tim Wellens beats Alejandro Valverde for second win in Challenge Mallorca

Tim Wellens of Lotto-Soudal has secured his second consecutive victory in the challenge Mallorca, beating Movistar's Alejandro Valverde to win the Trofeo Andratx-Mirador des Colomer.

The route of the third of four events that together form the Challenge Mallorca was adjusted on Friday due to the closure of one of the roads. The new route, still from Andratx to the Mirador des Colomer, was 158.7 kilometers long.

Team Sky clearly had big plans for the day as Jon Dibben and Christian Knees has a 30-second lead over the pack with ten kilometers to go, but the two teammates couldn't stay ahead much longer and were caught shortly after.

Wellens, who had already won Friday's event, was again had the better legs and reached the summit just ahead of Movistar's Alejandro Valverde and Lotto-Soudal teammate Tiesj Benoot.

The victory is Lotto-Soudal's third in a row in this year's Challenge Mallorca as Andre Greipel had already won the opening event on Thursday.

The fourth and final event of the Challenge Mallorca, the Trofeo Playa de Palma, takes place on Sunday and has a total length of 165.8 kilometers. Following a climb of about 250 meters at around 40 kilometers from the finish, the final stretch will be mostly flat.
