ETOILE DE BESSèGES

The opening stage of the Etoile de Besseges has been won by Arnaud Demare of FDJ. Alexander Kristoff of Katusha-Alpecin and WB Veranclassic Aqua Protect's Roy Jans completed the top three.

The first European stage race of the season saw four riders escape and create an advantage of around four minutes. Nico Denz (AG2R La Mondiale), Kevin Lebreton (Armee de Terre), Frederik Backaert (Wanty-Groupe Gobert) and Jeremy Bescond (HP BTP-Auber 93) were still in the lead when the race arrived to the local circuit in Beaucaire but were eventually caught with two kilometers to go.

The final stretch went slightly up-hill but this didn't stop Demare from giving it his all and crossing the line ahead of Norwegian Kristoff.

As such, the winner of last year's Milan-San Remo as well as several other races once again announces himself as a force to be reckoned with in the current season.

The FDJ rider will have to defend his leader's jersey in a 152km flat stage from Nimes to Rodilhan, likely an other target for sprinters.
