Bryan Coquard of Direct Energie has won the last stage of the Volta a la Comunitat Valenciana. The overall classification went to Colombian Nairo Quintana of Movistar.
The fifth and final stage of the Spanish race was significantly shortened due to the bad weather circumstances in the area of Valencia. The remainder of the stage took place on a local circuit in the city itself and its short length promised to have an explosive result.
Ilso Keisse of Quick-Step Floors decided to try his luck and was later joined by former world champion Michael Kwiatkowski.
The two adventurers almost made it all the way to the finish but the peloton reached them just in time to force a mass sprint.
In the sprint, Bryan Coquard crossed the line first ahead of his compatriot Nacer Bouhanni of Cofidis. Dutchman Coen Vermeltfoort of Team Roompot-Oranje Peloton came in third ahead of Yves Lampaert and Keisse.
Nairo Quintana finished safely in the pack and as such confirmed his overall victory.
"This was one of the first places where I rode in Europe after coming from Colombia, so it's a special race for me," Quintana said shortly after receiving his Yellow Jersey.
The winner also made a prediction for Colombian cycling in the future. "I'm sure we will see a lot more Colombians riding around here soon."
