Alejandro Valverde wins 2017 Vuelta a Murcia

Alejandro Valverde of Movistar Team has won the 37th edition of the Vuelta a Murcia. The Spaniard finished solo, several minutes ahead of the peloton.

Having already won the race four times before, the home rider was determined to add a fifth as he attacked with 70 kilometers to go and kept a chasing group with Tony Gallopin and Tiesj Benoot at bay.

Going into the city of Murcia, Valverde's lead over the peloton remained stable at just below three minutes as those chasing the leader realized that a late comeback had become impossible.

A large group of chasers finished at just over two minutes from the winner with Colombian Jhonatan Restrepo of Katusha winning the sprint for second place.

Valverde first won the Vuelta a Murcia when it was still a stage race in 2004, repeating this victory in 2007 and 2008. In 2014, The Movistar rider also won the second edition of the race as a one-day event.
