Alejandro Valverde: This was my most beautiful victory in Murcia

Alejandro Valverde believes that his solo victory in Murcia on Saturday is the most beautiful of the five wins he has achieved in the Spanish race.

"The truth is that it was really hard because I had the wind in my face in the whole last part. The plan was to attack at the summit although I had hoped that someone would have joined me, so we could take turns," the Spaniard said.

"I went alone and I decided to give it my all downhill. 'If they catch me, they catch me. And if not, full speed ahead', I said. In the end I made it. I had to try, even if there were many kilometers to go and it was going to be hard. It was the right moment. I tried and succeeded."

The victory is Valverde's fifth in his home race and his second since the Vuelta a Murcia turned into a one-day event.

"It's definitely a special victory. I'm at home and this victory is for the region and for all the people of Murcia. It's certainly the most beautiful of my five victories here, because of the great effort I had to make in order to win.

"With the victory of Nairo (Quintana) in Valencia we're having a very good start to the season," the Movistar rider added.

"We're showing that there's a reason why we were the best team for the fourth time in a row in 2016. On Wednesday we start in Andalucia. Alberto Contador and other top riders will be there and we will need to be at their level."
