Eddy Merckx: Tom Boonen can win Roubaix

Cycling legend Eddy Merckx believes that Tom Boonen has everything to win Paris-Roubaix for the fifth time.

The former cyclist has been keeping an eye on the current season of the Quick-Step Floors rider and believes he is in good shape to get the victory in the Classic. "Tom won a stage in Argentina. He is in a good way and he looks very sharp," Merckx told Belgian sports channel Sporza.

"We all wish him a fifth cobblestone in Roubaix, but I think he will also show himself in races before that. And yes, Boonen can win Roubaix. If you see that last year he was second after a difficult preparation, this year he can definitely win."

Merckx is part of the organization of the Tour of Oman and he is very happy that Boonen is also taking part in that race. "It's the last stage race for Tom and we are very pleased that he is in it. He is an important rider that we can add to our competitors list. This is very important for the organization," he commented.

Boonen is set to finish his professional cycling career at Paris-Roubaix and he has stated that a victory there is his most important goal of the season.
