Ben Hermans wins stage and takes lead at Tour of Oman

Belgian Ben Hermans has won the second stage of the Tour of Oman. The BMC Racing Team rider was followed by Rui Costa of UAE Abu Dhabi and Jakob Fuglsang of Astana.

The stage was 175 kilometers long and and had several riders attempt a breakaway early on, with little success. It was later on the day that Mark Christian (Aqua Blue Sport) and Preben Van Hecke (Sport Vlaanderen-Baloise) tried their luck and formed a gap that reached more than eight minutes.

The two riders were caught at 22 kilometers from the finish line but some others then tried to escape from the bunch, including the winner of the first stage Alexander Kristoff (Katusha-Alpecin), Daniel Eaton (UnitedHealthCare) and Norman Hansen (Aqua Blue Sport). The pack soon neutralized these attempts however.

BMC worked hard to keep a high pace in the peloton in order to avoid more attempts to escape and set the stage for Ben Hermans, who was the strongest in a final uphill sprint.

With this victory, the Belgian also takes the lead in the General Classification at the expense of Kristoff.
