Alejandro Valverde wins first stage at Ruta del Sol

Alejandro Valverde has taken the victory at the first stage of the Ruta del Sol. The Movistar rider crossed the finish line ahead of Wout Poels of Team Sky and Sebastien Reichenbach of FDJ.

The first stage of the race, also known as the Vuelta a Andalucia, was 155.4 kilometers long and had five climbs. The day started with an escape group conformed by Tosh Van der Sande, Florian Senechal, Kirill Sveshnikov, Berden de Vries, Georg Preidler and Daniel Turek.

They managed to stay ahead of a peloton that was pushed by Trek-Segafredo, determined to help Alberto Contador take a good spot at the end. With 35 kilometers to go, the escapees were caught.

The most exciting part of the day was the ascent to the Puerto de Monachil, where Alberto Contador attacked and was quickly followed by Valverde. On the descent these two men were joined by Jon Izagirre and Diego Rosa at 10 kilometers from the finish line, and by Poels and Reichenbach at three.

It all came to a finish sprint that was won by Valverde, who was closely followed by Poels and Reichenbach. The Spaniard also took the lead of the general classification and got his second victory of the season.
