Soren Kragh Andersen victorious in Tour of Oman, Ben Hermans keeps lead

Danish rider Soren Kragh Andersen of Team Sunweb has won the third stage of the Tour of Oman. Belgian Ben Hermans remains in the overall lead.

The third of six stages started at the Sultan Qaboos University and finished 162 kilometer later in Quriyat.

Six riders escaped in the opening phase with Matthew Brammeier (Aqua Blue Sport), Chun Kai Feng (Bahrain-Merida), Bert Van Lerberghe (Sport Vlaanderen-Baloise), Gavin Mannion (UnitedHealthCare Pro Cycling Team), Kazushige Kuboki (Nippo-Vini Fantini) and Frantisek Sisr (CCC Sprandi Polkowice) building a gap of almost four minutes after just 25 kilometers on the road.

The gap fluctuated around the three-minute mark for a large part of the race until the peloton finally increased the pace and caught the escapees with 15 kilometers to go until the finish.

Nippo-Vini Fantini's Julian Arredondo Moreno was one of the first riders to attack in the finale. The Colombian's attempt was unsuccessful however and the final battle for the victory had Andersen cross the line ahead of Rui Costa (UAE Abu Dhabi and race leader Ben Hermans. Laurens De Plus and Jakob Fuglsang completed the top five.

Hermans (BMC Racing Team) retains his leader's jersey for another day. The Belgian now has a modest two-second lead over Rui Costa with Fuglsang and Fuglsang follows at another eight seconds.
