Alejandro Valverde takes lead as Victor Campenaerts wins Ruta del Sol time trial

Victor Campenaerts of LottoNL-Jumbo has won the third stage of the Ruta del Sol, an individual time trial in Lucena. Alejandro Valverde is the new overall leader.

The 11.9km time trial was always going to be a close battle between the top candidates, although none could compete with Belgian Campenaerts who needed just 14:55 to complete the course.

Movistar's Valverde came close, needing just one second more than the stage winner, while race leader Alberto Contador clocked the third time at seven seconds from Campenaerts and six seconds behind Valverde.

Thanks to this result, Valverde now leads Contador by no more than a second with two stages still to go in the Spanish 2.HC race.

Thibaut Pinot started the day in second place but moves down to third place after setting the fourth time in the time trial, nine seconds slower than the winner. The top five was completed by Trek-Segafredo's Fabio Felline.

Sky's Wout Poels, who lost time during Thursday's queen stage, recovered by setting the sixth time at 16 seconds from Campenaerts.

The fourth stage, scheduled for Saturday, starts in La Campana and finishes in Sevilla after 179 kilometers. The stage includes climbs but is mostly flat during the last 60 kilometers.
