Algarve: Castroviejo wins stage, Roglic leads General Classification

Jonathan Castroviejo has taken the victory in the third stage of the Volta ao Algarve. It was an Individual Time Trial in which Tony Martin of Quick-Step Floors got the second best time and Primoz Roglic of Lotto NL-Jumbo the third.

The third stage of the Volta ao Algarve took place in the Portuguese city of Sagres, with both the start and finish points at the city's fortress.

Early on the day, Lotto NL-Jumbo's Lars Boom set the best time at 21 minutes and 35 seconds, which showed to be unbeatable during most of the day.

But current time trial champion Tony Martin showed his expertise in this kind of stages and managed to top Boom's time at 21 minutes and 28 seconds, pushing himself to the limit in the last meters.

His lead in the stage didn't last long though. Some minutes later, the Spanish time trial specialist Jonathan Castroviejo of Movistar set a better time at 21 minutes and 24 seconds. This was good enough for the rider to win the stage.

The overall number two after the second stage, Primoz Roglic (Lotto NL-Jumbo) managed to get the third best time of the day at 21 minutes and 29 seconds, which was enough for him to move into the first place of the general classification.

Dan Martin of Quick-Step Floors, who began the time trial as race leader, set a time of 23 minutes and 4 seconds and as such dropped to the sixth place of the overall standings.

The fourth stage of the Volta ao Algarve will be 203,4 kilometers long between Almodovar and Tavira along a hilly route.
