Ben Hermans consolidates lead at Tour of Oman

Belgian Ben Hermans has won the fifth stage of the Tour of Oman and strengthens his overall lead. The BMC Racing Team rider crossed the finish line ahead of Fabio Aru of Astana and Rui Costa of UAE Abu Dhabi.

The 152.5 kilometer long stage started with an escape of five riders: Daniel Diaz (Delko Marseille Provence KTM), Preben Van Hecke (Sport Vlaanderen-Baloise), Mark Christian (Aqua Blue Sport), Jonathan Clarke (UnitedHealthCare) and Olivier Pardini (WB-Veranclassic Aquality Protect).

This group managed to create a gap of more than eight minutes with the peloton, also helped by some water on the road that forced the bunch to split into smaller clusters. But this was not enough and they were caught on the ascent to Green Mountain.

Hermans and BMC had clear that they had to show strength on the mountain to be able to maintain the lead. They kept a good pace in the peloton to repel the attacks of riders like Lachlan Morton of Dimension Data until it was time for the Belgian to show himself in the last kilometer.

Merhawi Kudus (Dimension Data) tried to keep up with Hermans' rhythm. He failed to do so in the final maters however and was eventually also surpassed by Aru and Costa.

The last stage of the Tour of Oman will be between The Wave Muscat and Matrah Corniche and will include two climbs, to finish after a flat stretch.
